National planning policy requires that all developments should be 'sustainable'. There are three components to sustainability, social, economic and environmental. This theme of the neighbourhood plan, Local Character, is about environmental sustainability. ,
New developments should not harm the local character of the community. Ideally they should enhance it. If a development does harm to the local character, it can only be permitted if the net benefits to the community outweigh the damage done.
